9:30 & 11 a.m. BACK TO THE CLASSROOM Dust off your gown and join current Sewanee students as alumni are invited to sit in on one of the regularly scheduled academic classes.

10 a.m. – 5 p.m. UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY EXHIBIT featuring “Richard Fleming: Walking to Guantánamo,” an exhibition of photographs and stories drawn from the author’s journey by foot, horse cart, bus, truck, train repair vehicle, bicycle and tractor across Cuba, all the way from Pinar del Rio to Guantánamo.

Noon – ROTARY lunch meeting at the EQB House. For all alumni Rotarians – join the local club for their regular meeting.

1 p.m. CARILLON TOUR in historic Shapard Tower with Carillonneur John Bordley, Professor Emeritus. Get a bird’s eye view of the Sewanee campus with this informative tour.

1 – 2:30 p.m. ALUMNI HIKE on CALDWELL RIM TRAIL in the upper reaches of Lost Cove with Professors Bran Potter, Deb McGrath, Scott Torreano, and Ken Smith, and SOP Director John Benson. Come hike Sewanee’s newest trail and get a glimpse of the university’s recently-acquired property. To meet for the hike, follow signs beginning behind the Sewanee Market.

1 p.m. UNIVERSITY STRATEGIC PLAN presentation by John Swallow, C’89, University Provost in St. Luke’s Chapel. Hear about the plan that was recently approved by the Board of Trustees for Sewanee’s future.

1:30 – 4 p.m. Open House at the Ralston Listening Library, upstairs, duPont Library.

2 p.m. SEWANEE FARM presentation by farm manager Gina Raicovich in St. Luke’s Chapel. Don’t miss this wonderful update on the revitalized Sewanee Farm in its first semester of operation.

2 p.m. DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE HOMECOMING LECTURE Georgi Kapitanov C’07 will give the Math/CS Homecoming talk on “‘Solving” Cancer’—an Introduction to Mathematical Biology” in Woods Labs 121.  Reception to follow.

2 p.m. READING AND BOOK SIGNING Sewanee Poems by Richard Tillinghast, C’62, and illustrated by Joseph Winkleman, C’64 at the University Archives.

2:30 p.m. BOOK SIGNING Mary Priestley, C’72, will have her book, Hike ’Em All at South Cumberland at Taylor’s Merchantile.

3 p.m. Dedication of the Robert A Degen Seminar Room in Walsh-Ellet 310. Renovation of this classroom was made possible through contributions in honor of Professor of Economics Robert Degen who taught at Sewanee from 1951 to 1985. 

3 p.m. “WALKING TO GUANTANAMO” talk by artist Richard Fleming in Guerry Auditorium, reception following in the University Art Gallery.

3:30 – 5 p.m. SNOWDEN RECEPTION The Department of Forestry and Geology will host a wine and cheese reception. All forestry, geology and natural resources majors, their families, as well as any friends of Snowden
are welcome! See this impressive state-of-the-art facility.

3:30 p.m. The Forest Unseen Come hear author and professor of biology David Haskell talk about his experience of observing one square meter of forest everyday for a year. The book, The Forest Unseen, was the freshman book this year. St. Luke’s Chapel.

3:30 p.m. GOLF COURSE TOUR. Come see a first-hand look at the almost complete renovations of the redesigned University Golf Course. Meet Golf Pro Matt Daniels and see the work of Gil Hanse, golf course architect (also architect for the Olympic course in Rio de Janeiro). Meet at the old club house.

4 p.m. CARILLON CONCERT by Carillonneur Buck Lyon-Vaiden, C’67.

4 p.m. AMERICAN CHESTNUT TREEPLANTING in the Environmental Quad in front of Snowden Hall. Join alumni members of the American Chestnut Foundation for this ceremonial planting on the domain as part of the American Chestnut restoration process.

8 a.m. FUN RUN FOR ALUMNI beginning at McGriff Alumni House. Start the day with 5 K to the cross and back.

(Directions: From University Avenue’s downtown blinker light, turn right onto 41-A North. Turn at the first left onto Sherwood Road (route 56). Stay on Rt. 56 for 2.8 miles, passing both St. Mary’ Road and the first of two Garnertown Roads (both on your right as you go by). TURN RIGHT ONTO THE SECOND GARNERTOWN ROAD at a one-story home. Garnertown Road curves right toward a green mailbox (#696) on your left. About 15 feet after this mailbox turn left into a wooded entrance marked with tall circular sign “IONA: Art Sanctuary – 630”. Drive slowly through the short patch of woods noting a large white carved horse art-form in front of you. In the field then, bear left up the hill to the mowed parking area.)

Just past the gates at the flashing yellow light, turn Right onto TN-156/Midway Road. Go. 4 miles and turn left to stay on TN-156/Jump Off Rd/Midwat Rd and then stay RIGHT when the road veers.
